Unless you are about 6 foot 6 inches,or taller, then you must be taking about a 24 inch wheel bike.The wheel is smaller,yet not actually 24 inches in measure.
A 24 inch whell bike is usually for a youth or smaller rider.
[about 5 foot tall or shorter unless you have really short legs]
sometimes a 26 inch wheel is better but try using a 165-170mm crank length as opposed to the normal 175mm.

My co-worker is raising her granddaughter who is eight. She has been looking for a 24 inch girls bike that is not a speed bike, as the eight year old is tall, but has not been riding for very long and doesn't want to throw in the extra stuff yet. Do you know where she could find such a bike??

BMX is the acronym of Bicycle Motocross. BMX is the sort of cycle racing with specially designed bicycles. Generally the wheels of these bikes are 18 to 24 inches. 24 BMX bikes are used for BMX racing and BMX free style. Usually BMX racing is performing on the earthen tracks and to perform tricks on the bikes BMX freestyle are prefer. BMX freestyle has five disciplines that are street, dirt, park, vert and flat land. All these disciplines involve some technical movements of the bikes in different ways. The main three disciplines that participate prefer are Leap of faith, high jump and drag.
For the races and tricks special bikes are designed according to the use and surrounding conditions. Some of the bikes offer quality with low price and therefore they are affordable to everyone. The material used in the bicycles is generally light weight. The material prefer for construction of the frames is aluminum. Aluminum makes the bikes light and strong. Main features of such bikes are sealed bearing with flip-flip alloy hubs.These all are comfortable for all the racers. Generally these bikes are able to bare the weight of about 25 lbs.
Some of the 24 BMX bikes are constructed with 6061 aluminum with custom hydro formed tubing. These bikes are provided with the accessories like Funn Isis crank, Cassette sealed bearing hubs, Funn CNC light weight stems, Maxxis tires, and Sun rims. Hande bars are created with Cr-Mo material.
Many of the 24 BMX bikes are fully made up with Cr-Mo material. These bikes are provided with rear brakes for safe and sudden stopping. These bikes are also light weighted and therefore easy and comfortable to handle.
The 24 BMX bikes are available in major two types they are for dirt and ramps. The bikes that are used on dirt ramps or used for the free style need to be sturdy and heavy frame. If we compare the actual freestyle bikes and conventional bikes then we observe that the free style bikes are heavier than other bikes. On the other side jump bikes are lighter than free style bikes and heavier than the BMX bikes. These bikes are available in various frame size and the materials. According to the size and weight we can choose them.
The BMX bikes are provided with about 20" diameter wheels. BMX jumps bicycles have bigger wheel diameter than the general BMX bikes. For tall and fat riders recommended diameter of the wheel are about 24". Most of the jump bikes have 13 gauge spokes where as the free style bikes have about 48 gage spokes. Tires of the bikes also vary. Jump bikes have to concentrate on the tractions rather than speed and therefore tires of the bikes are heavily treaded among all other BMX bikes. On the other hand freestyle BMX bikes have smooth treads for easy use on the pavements and indoor. To perform the trick BMX bikes are provided with the axle pegs.
According to these specifications one can choose the appropriate bike for their racing.
